Designed by Robert Abernathy - Characteristic Motif of Prairie-style

No expense was spared when the Harrington House was originally designed by Robert Abernathy and built by Fred 'Big Dad" Harrington in 1918.  Now for sale by auction! Online auction starts Monday, September 23, 2024 at 10:00am EDT and ends on Wednesday, September 25, 2024 at 12:10pm EDT.

The residence reflects the foursquare design with strong influences from the Prairie school style. Of particular importance are the double-hung windows all around the house. Each has an upper sash of patterned wooden muntin over a single pane. A characteristic motif of Prairie-style homes on the upper elevation of the facade (the house faces east) which is asymmetrical. Unique to the home are the transom windows which frame all three doorways on the front of the home, as well as the decorative gable window on the facade. With Prairie-style influence the home demonstrated is heavy, masonry porch supports. The squared piers reflect the stability of the one-story porch, an essential element to this particular style.

The home has a low-pitched roof, continuous eaves, and bands of casement windows. The garage acts as an intermediary between home and space of the open prairie, relating the two buildings to the site. Of important note are the corbels around the roofline of the red brick home, which provide structural support and the original barrel vaulted Ludowici tile roof.

Along with Harrington House, the site also contains the first home built by Margaret Harrington that was previously relocated to the site. Both homes have been restored in the past few years. The main brick home has four bedrooms and 2 1/2 baths and is two stories. It is stunning and has many of the original antiques still within it. The floors are gorgeous quarter-sawn oak that have been meticulously restored to amazing beauty.

The roof was completely removed and reinstalled over ice and water shield underlayment. The Dutch gutters have added drainage to prevent soffit and fascia damage, and all the soffit and fascia was replaced recently with original type woods to ensure the beauty of the architecture. The house contains its original fireplace tiles, glass doorknobs, chandeliers and light fixture which add to the beauty of the residence. There are two staircases with beautiful wooden steps. Within the home French doors separate the living areas from one another.

The home, built by Margaret and moved here, is a small frame farmhouse with a front porch, was added to the site in 2000. It is on an engineered pier and beam concrete support. It has two bedrooms and 1 bath. It is approximately 1800 sq. ft. The rooms are large. It also has Rookwood pottery fireplace tiles. This home was built in 1928. The brick garage of the main house is a two-car garage with two rooms adjacent to it. There are new concrete driveways as well as a circular drive-in front of the main house. There is fencing around the entire property and a wrought fence with a security gate in front of the residences.

Access to major thoroughfares for this property is excellent. Hwy 75 and Hwy 190 (George Bush) are both within a mile. There is also DART pickup directly in front of the residence. The Collin Creek mall site in Plano, a 100-acre, a $1 billion redevelopment is scheduled for reopening soon with 2,300 apartments, hotel, offices and a large central park and is within a mile or so as well. The new fine arts center is right down the street on Alma within 1/2 mile from the property.
